The Parenting Act
of 2007 (requires that parents be notified that when they are
involved in court proceedings in which parenting functions for a child are at
issue (custody,
parenting time, visitation, access to children matters) that each
parent must attend an approved basic level class. A 2012 list of Nebraska State Court Administrator-Approved Parent
Education Providers is made available for your convenience or you may obtain
the most current list on the web at http://supremecourt.ne.gov/mediation/parenting-divorce.shtml.
Individuals
will need to contact the agency/organization for class schedules and
registration. Registering for the class
is required prior to attending. The
Approved Parent Education Providers will provide you with a certificate of
attendance at the conclusion of your class.
You will need to file with the court your certificate of attendance
before coming to the final hearing.
Research
by Robert Emergy, Ph.D. shows that parents who choose to mediate their
parenting decisions rather than litigate have a much higher long-term level of
parental access to the children, including time spent with each parent, more
frequent time with the children, and much higher participation in the child’s
discipline, special events, school and church functions, holidays and
vacations. The Parenting Education
Class is intended to provide you with some basic skills to assist you in making
decisions for yourself and for your children’s best interests.
